How many petals around the rose?

GAME OBJECTIVES
I was introduced to “Petals Around the Rose” by Dr. Richard Duke at the University of Michigan . Dr. Duke used to begin each of his gaming/simulation courses with this exercise. While some students would solve the problem right away, others would struggle all semester. It had taken Dr. Duke well over a year himself, and he would always explain that the smarter you were, the longer it took to figure it out.

The game is quite simple. Only a basic understanding of math is required and an open and creative mind. The game can be used as an example of how different people look at the world differently, and how these different ways of looking can yield different answers. In “Petals Around the Rose” there is always one correct answer. The problem is how we define the problem.

GAME INSTRUCTIONS

Press the “Roll” button to get started.
Enter how many petals you think are around the rose.
Press the “Check” button to check your answer.
Repeat steps 1-3 until you can get it right every time!

Once you have figured it out, don’t spoil the fun for others…let them figure it out for themselves!

Unbelievable coaching session :-)

The most extraordinary coaching session I’ve ever seen…
Please don’t tell me anymore that “Why?” is not a good coaching question. :-)))))

papa, can we play outside? – no.
why? because it’s 5:00 in the morning.
it’s too early.
why? the sun hasn’t come up yet.
why? because the sun comes up later.
why? well, the earth goes around, and when it turns a certn amount, the sun shows on the horizon.
why? i don’t know.
why? why don’t you know, papa? because i didn’t pay attention in school, okay? i didn’t listen in class.
why? because i was high all the time.
i smoked too much pot.
why? i didn’t think it would matter.
why? i just figured my life would come together on its own.
but then i met your mom, and you came along.
so now i work at the muffler shop.
why? well, it’s too late for me to pursue a career now, and since your mom has a job with benefits i stay home and i take care of you, ’cause what i make is pretty much just a joke.
why? well, the service economy replaced manufacturing and here’s no real jobs in america anymore.
why? we had good jobs for a while, but it’s just ’cause we were lucky and now we’re unlucky.
why? it’s just the way it goes.
why? ’cause god is dead and we’re alone.
okay.

You are mere cogs in a machine

Krishnamurti

“Religion, politics, society are exploiting you, and you are being conditioned by them; you are being forced in a particular direction. You are not human beings; you are mere cogs in a machine. You suffer patiently, submitting to the cruelties of environment, when you, individually, have the possibilities of changing them.” – Jiddu Krishnamurti

Ten years anniversary of Beslan attack

I remember these days of ten years ago with absolute clarity.
At that time, my kids was 3, 7 and 8 yo, and they all went to school in Bucharest.
I remember how I empathized with parents there; I remember how, for the first two days, I could’t stop to visualize myself powerless staying with no information outside of a school with my children inside, with no water or food, in the hands of some armed terrorists.
I remember me crying by fury, just wondering what kind of fucking bastard you have to be, to torture in this way some children for your fucking political reasons. Then, there was the final attack.
No words. Really no words.
Just a prayer. For the kids and for the parents, sure, but also for the terrorists.
If there is a God, they need a prayer more than anyone else.
